Born in West Bengal, India on 10 February 1942. Educated at Ramnagar Rao High School, West Bengal, 1954-59; I.Sc., 1961; B.Sc. 1963, and B.Sc. (Hons) 1964, Calcutta University; M.Sc. 1966, Kalyani University; Ph.D., 1970, Visva Bharati University; Post Doctoral Research, Astrakhan Fisheries Research Institute, Astrakhan and Ukrainian Fisheries Research Institute, Kiev, USSR, 1974-76; DAAD Visiting Fellow, University of Hamburg, Germany 1992.

UGC Emeritus Fellow and AICTE Emeritus Fellow; Vice-Chairman, International Centre for Ecological Engineering, Kalyani University, 2007 to date.

Lecturer, 1973-81, and Reader, Zoology 1982-90, Kalyani University; Professor, 1990-92, Vidyasagar University; Professor of Zoology, 1992 to 2007, Kalyani University.

Research Areas: Aquaculture, aquatic microbiology, water quality management, ecological engineering, ecological sanitation, cryopreservation of fish embryos, global warming and climate change.
