Born in Rurkee, India on 22 August 1935. Educated at Khalsa High School Bundala 1945-51, Government Agricultural College (Now Punjab Agricultural University) Ludhiana 1951-55, University of California, Davis, California 1957-60. B.Sc. 1955; Ph.D. 1960.
